Here's a quick summary: The phrase "Below the line" comes from the early studio days when a film's budget top-sheet would have a line separating above-the-line and below-the-line costs. In budgeting a motion picture or television production, below-the-line costs include salaries of the non-starring cast members and the crew, as well as the studio where they are filming, equipment, travel, location, catering, and the list goes on.
